What Are Essential Oils and How Do They Work?

Essential oils are pure concentrated extracts distilled from selected plants. The plants contain hormones, antibacterial properties, pheromones and cell regenerating agents.

A variation in prices between different oils relates to the different extraction procedures. For example sandalwood has to be collected at the optimum time once the tree is matured. This can take up to 30 years. Some oils can be difficult to extract involving a complex process and others have low yields per plant, for example it takes 30 rose heads to produce one drop of essential oil.

Only 100% pure and natural essential oils possess the true characteristics of the desired plant and they can not be reproduced synthetically. Where the plant is grown, the part of the plant used and the extraction process are all factors that effect the quality of the oil. It is important to purchase the oil of a reliable supplier and ensure they are 100% pure and natural. They should not contain fragrance as this is man made and synthetic. Fragrance has no therapeutic benefits, unlike pure essential oils and can nullify any benefit you will receive from essential oils.

When you inhale the aroma of an essential oil, receptor cells in our nose transmit impulses about the aroma to the olfactory area of the brain. The olfactory bulb registers and processes the smell, working quickly on nearby systems that control memory, emotions, sexual feelings, hormones and heart rate. This is why essential oils can alter your moods and feelings, counteract stress, stimulate or relax your mind and body

Depending on the oil, it can take only seconds for an essential oil to reach the brain through the sense of smell and minutes for it to be absorbed into the blood stream through the skin. Essential oils have an affinity with the skins natural oils allowing this rapid absorption. They enter and leave the body very efficiently leaving no toxic residue behind. They are excreted through the normal bodily functions including through the lungs via exhalation and through the skin via perspiration.

Essential oils have a very positive effect on blood circulation playing an important part in bringing nutrients and oxygen to the tissues and stimulating the lymphatic system to dispose of waste products. Essential oils also help stimulate the immune system.
